8th July, 1941.
My dear Gent,
I have told the Secretariat to send
a copy of a recent broadcast which I made about
Evacuation Troubles to the Secretary of State,
but I think perhaps a letter on the subject may
help to enlighten you further on the matter.
Possibly you may think that I went a bit far in
the broadcast, especially where I spoke of the
fate that might overtake unprotected women in
the event of really heavy attack here, but many
of those to whom I was addressing myself could
only be brought to realize the necessity of
evacuation by the plainest speaking.

here about the evacua tion and recently there
A were signs that it was mounting rapidly.
public meeting of Evacuees husbands was announced
and the Husbands Committee got nervous of what
might be decided at it. I had a talk with them
and gave them something to stand on at the
meeting and they asked me to broadcast after it
was over. The meeting was very noisy and a lot
of stupid things were said at it: but it let
off a lot of steam.
